What Rufus is designed to do
Rufus is a lightweight utility for creating bootable USB drives from ISO and other disk-image files. It is useful when installing an operating system, repairing a computer or preparing recovery media. Because Rufus works close to the USB and boot-media level, the choices made during setup can affect whether a computer boots successfully.
Choose the correct ISO
Start with a legitimate ISO from the operating-system publisher or another trusted source. The ISO should match the architecture and edition you intend to install. If a download provides a checksum, compare it before writing the image. This simple step helps confirm that the file was not corrupted during download.
GPT or MBR?
GPT is generally the better choice for modern UEFI systems. MBR is associated with older BIOS-style boot environments and older hardware. If you know that your computer uses UEFI, GPT is normally the appropriate combination. If you are preparing media for an older computer, check its firmware documentation first instead of guessing.
UEFI and boot mode
A bootable USB can be perfectly created and still fail to start if the firmware is configured incorrectly. Enter the computer’s boot menu, select the USB device and make sure the firmware mode matches the media. Some systems have separate UEFI and legacy compatibility settings. Changing firmware settings should be done carefully because incorrect changes can affect existing operating-system boot entries.
Create the USB safely
Back up anything important from the USB drive before using Rufus because writing an image normally erases the existing contents. Select the correct USB device, choose the ISO, confirm the partition scheme and start the process. Do not remove the drive until Rufus reports completion.
Common problems
If the PC does not boot, try another USB port, recreate the media, check the ISO, verify the boot order and confirm the firmware mode. If Windows setup reports partition or compatibility problems, review the target machine’s storage configuration rather than repeatedly recreating the USB without changing the underlying issue.
A useful tool for technicians and everyday users
Rufus is valuable because it keeps boot-media creation focused. It is small, fast and practical for Windows and Linux installers. The best results come from combining it with a genuine ISO, a reliable USB drive and a clear understanding of the target computer’s firmware.
